Guide to Presidential Dollars

The word dollar comes from the German word Thaler, which was a large silver German coin. The dollar was one of the first silver coins made, in 1794. Since then the dollar coin has been minted periodically with different versions of Liberty like the Morgan Dollar 1878-1904 and again in 1921, Peace dollars 1921 – 1935 and other individuals on the obverse those of President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1971-1978), suffragist Susan B. Anthony (1979-1981, 1999), and Sacagawea in 2000. The Presidential $1 Coin Program launched in 2007. Silver dollars are the most collected coins in Numismatics.

About the Presidential $1 Coin Program

The United States decided to honor our Nation’s Presidents by issuing annual dollar coins featuring their images in the order which they served. The Program began in 2007 with Presidents Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison.

(Note: In December 2011, Secretary of the Treasury Timothy F. Geithner in order to reduce costs directed that the United States Mint suspend minting and issuing circulating Presidential $1 Coins. Regular circulating demand for the coins will be met through the Federal Reserve Bank’s existing inventory of circulating coins minted prior to 2012.

The Presidential $1 Coin Act (Public Law 109-145) seeks to revitalize the design of United States coins and return circulating coinage to its position as an object of aesthetic beauty in its own right. Accordingly, the Presidential $1 Coins feature larger, more dramatic artwork, as well as edge-incused inscriptions of the year of minting or issuance, E PLURIBUS UNUM and the mint mark.

The United States Mint minted and issued four Presidential $1 Coins per year, each with a common reverse design featuring a striking rendition of the Statue of Liberty. The composition of the Presidential $1 Coins is identical to that of the Golden Sacagawea dollar which was launched in 2000, after the failure of the Susan B Anthony dollar.

These coins created a increased interest for coin collecting.  By establishing an inexpensive way for children and adults to collect the complete series of coins.

Value:  Most presidential coins are not valuable and worth face value of $1.00 However there are some worth considerably more:
