Guide to Barber Quarters

Guide to Barber Quarters

The Value of Barber Quarters

From 1892 to 1916, the barber quarter, which was a part of the barber coinage system consisting of the Dime, Quarters and Half Dollars, was part of the United State’s legal tender. In some literature, it is called the Liberty Head Quarter.

The name Barber Quarters was used to describe them because the image engraved on it was designed by the then Chief Engraver of the United States, Charles E. Barbers.

When the new Mint Director, Edward O. Leech took office in October, 16 1890, he was enthusiastic about a redesigning of the coin. After some failed attempts, Leech on June 11, 1891 instructed Barber to prepare designs for the quarter, along with the dime and half dollar.

Design

The Barber Quarters shows a depiction of the head of Liberty with its face looking rightward. The image wears a crown that is made from the branch of an olive tree. On the small band on its head is inscribed LIBERTY while IN GOD WE TRUST is written above her head.  13 six-pointed stars and date surrounds her.

Grading Barber Quarter

The Barber Quarter is a delight of most coin collectors because it is rare and unique. It is not a common knowledge in the world of today’s modern coinage collectors.

The minimum value of a Barber Quarter is between $3.00 and $4.79 (based on spot silver price of $18.24)  for old quarters depending on the spot price for silver. A old Quarter in good condition is worth more. Collector prize the S mint from San Francisco coins more highly. The value of an 1897-S, 1899-S or 1908-S can be up to $30 or more. For those that are well preserved and higher in grades, you can receive hundreds of dollars for them.

You may be wondering how you can know the condition of your coins. Worry no more. A Barber coin with mint marks and rare dates have a certain value to them. But fine looking coins in peak condition are far more valuable. Collectors pay small fortunes for these. Uncirculated Barber Head Quarters are very popular. They can be worth $150. The value of a barber increases as the grade and rarity increases.

The chances of finding a coin with a better grade are higher than finding a coin with a rare date. For example, a 1911-S Quarter that is in good condition but quite worn can go for $3.95. But if it is AU almost uncirculated and in better condition, it easily can be bought at $105+.

A Quarter on whose headband LIBERTY is fully spelt out is in the category of fine condition while the one with an incomplete spelling of LIBERTY on the headband is in the category of lesser good condition.

A highly desirable Barber Quarter is usually crispy and sharp in its details. This category is called Almost Uncirculated (AU). It can go for $50 or more.
